Rotorua Mayor Kevin Winters says he is “absolutely stoked” at Air New Zealand’s announcement today that the airline is to commence direct trans-Tasman services to the city later this year.
“It is a welcome shot in the arm for the city’s economic future and a stunning endorsement of the substantial cooperative partnership over recent years by the airport company, business community and council. Rotorua is now preparing for its new status as the ‘Gateway to the Central North Island’, he says.
“Trans-Tasman services will deliver a monumental boost to Rotorua’s reputation as an international tourism, convention and events destination and will open up an array of other economic opportunities.
“We have the infrastructure in place to take immediate advantage of today’s announcement and opportunities for our community are limited only by our imaginations.”
He is looking forward to personally greeting the first planeload of Aussie visitors in December with a warm ‘kia ora’ and a big ‘G’day’.
Mr Winters says his council is pleased that the city’s trans-Tasman services are to be operated by New Zealand’s national carrier as Air New Zealand enjoys an enviable worldwide reputation, has a substantial domestic and international network, and has established marketing relationships that will ensure success. He expected the new services to herald the start of a brand new chapter in the long standing and successful partnership the airline and the city had enjoyed over many years.
“I take my hat off to Air New Zealand and to the board and management of Rotorua Regional Airport Ltd. They and our council have played vital roles in delivering on our promise to the local community to provide scheduled international flights between Australia and Rotorua by the end of the year. We are absolutely on track to achieve that commitment which we made to our residents,” he says.
Benefits from the new trans-Tasman services would extend much further than just Rotorua, and opportunities existed for the wider Bay of Plenty and the rest of the central North Island. “What is important now is that everyone in Rotorua - including those who have previously expressed doubt whether this day would eventuate - come together and help make these services the success that we all know they can be, and that Rotorua deserves.
“Our business and tourism community will need to collectively put their hands up and play their part, and every Rotorua resident can also play a role – even if it is simply by ensuring that every single visitor gets to experience ‘manaakitanga’ - Rotorua’s famous brand of hospitality,” Mr Winters says.
“There’s no doubt in my mind that Rotorua is about to move into an incredibly exciting new phase of very positive development and has an undoubtedly bright future. It’s a great time to be part of this city, that’s for sure.”
